The Farm of Learning is centred around environmental management, community engagement and eco-tourism. The local indigenous tribe of the Pisilian region, the Atolan, have thousands of years worth of knowledge to impart. Their consent and participation are used to make informed and time-tested agroecological decisions. The indigenous peoples benefit from the conservation work and responsible resource utilization. Farming practices, such as raising sheep, are based on organic principles. This eco-friendly management technique has been adopted in order to ensure a healthy natural environment, and to reduce land and water pollution.Taiwan 1

Taiwan 2Volunteers are recruited to assist with farm running and environmental protection. These volunteers learn practical skills from their experience and a deep understanding on sustainable land management methods. Focus areas are rubbish clean up, most which is washed up from the ocean and threatens marine animals, and the coordinated removal of invasive species. Invasive species, such as the Climbing Hemp Vine (Mikania micrantha), reduce the prevalence and vigour of native species.Taiwan 4

In 2013 volunteers helped to build a composting toilet out of 100% natural resources, and a shelter hut in 2014. Volunteers learn about the local culture from local guides and the importance of engaging local communities for long-term adoption of conservation practices. The environmentally responsible camp offers volunteers biodegradable cleaning products, bamboo toothbrushes, and locally and sustainably harvested food.
